  • Powerful Interests Want to Maintain Vape Prohibition

    Powerful interests within the government of Thailand are urging that the country reject the efforts of one cabinet minister to legalize and regulate nicotine vaping products, and instead reconfirm the country’s ban on sales and import of e-cigarettes. Thailand’s vape ban has been in place since 2014, and has occasionally resulted in sensationally overzealous enforcement. The National Tobacco Products Control Committee said it would advise the cabinet to uphold the ban in a meeting last week, according to The Nation Thailand. The committee’s position is supported by Public Health Ministry permanent secretary Kiattiphum Wongrajit. However, the full cabinet (or Council of Ministers), which controls the Thai government’s executive branch, will make the final decision.

    On June 30, almost a year after Panama’s National Assembly passed legislation banning vape product sales, Panamanian President Laurentino Cortizo gave his assent to the bill. The new law prohibits sales and importation of all vaping and heated tobacco products, with or without nicotine. The law does not criminalize use, but bans vaping in any place where smoking is not allowed. The new law also prohibits internet purchases, and gives customs officials authority to inspect, detain and seize shipments. Resellers are allowed to import banned products meant for export to third countries, according to La Prensa.

    The Macau Legislative Assembly today approved the first draft of a bill that will, if passed, ban sales of all vaping products in the wealthy Chinese semi-autonomous region. The Macau Executive Council announced in January that it planned to propose a sales ban this year. On May 27, the government presented its draft bill, which includes proposed fines of 4,000 Macanese pataca (MOP) (about $500 U.S.) for individual offenders, and fines from 20,000-200,000 MOP ($2,500-25,000) for businesses.

    A new law will ensure that vaping companies making electronic cigarettes using synthetic nicotine, in fruit flavors that appeal to teenagers, can be regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.When the law took effect Thursday, it closed a loophole that allowed the products to avoid oversight. Now, they must follow the same federal sales restrictions and age requirements as tobacco products, the Associated Press reported. The new law "allows FDA to protect the public health from the harms of tobacco products, regardless of the source of nicotine," the FDA said in a statement Wednesday.These vaping companies must register with the FDA and submit their products for review within 30 days, the AP reported.The change doesn't ban these products outright, but brings them under regulatory oversight.

It was not sold as a recreational product, and in particular, not one for our kids. The Australian government will restrict flavours and colours, bring in "pharmaceutical-style" packaging, reduce the nicotine content, and halve the importation of non-prescription vapes.
