The Swedish government has formally proposed a ban on non-tobacco vape flavors, including menthol. The proposed law covers nicotine and non-nicotine e-liquid, and also captures regulatory authority over all synthetic nicotine products.If passed, sales of flavored vape products will be illegal beginning Jan. 1, 2023.

Hong Kong residents who vape or use heated tobacco products (HTPs) will face a grim reality since this May. That’s when a ban on sales and importation of vapes takes effect, and the vape market will instantly shift from legal to illegal.Hong Kong retailers report that sales of vape products have surged in recent weeks, as desperate vapers try to stockpile products. But 90 percent of recently polled HTP users say they will return to smoking cigarettes after the ban takes effect.

The United Kingdom will be announced vaping products as the smoking cessation medical products officially.The UK has long been a leader in endorsing the use of safer alternative nicotine products for smoking cessation, and as a result the nation has the lowest smoking rates ever recorded since cigarettes arrived on the scene decades ago.Back in 2017 the UK government’s document released last Summer, Towards a Smokefree Generation, A Tobacco Control Plan for England, encouraged different localities to develop their own tobacco control strategies, with a focus on e-cigarettes and other harm reduction or smoking cessation aides.The British Medical Association supports these developments and has suggested that e-cigarettes are licensed as medicine, allowing doctors to recommend them to smokers trying to quit.

A committee of the Israeli Knesset (parliament) will decide soon whether to approve the huge tax on vaping products imposed last November by the government’s finance ministry. The levy is the highest vape tax in the world. The tax is apparently already in effect, but it must be approved retroactively by the Knesset finance committee, according to Israeli researcher Zvi Herzig. The committee can also modify the order, which could mean reducing the extreme tax rate of nearly $7 (US) per milliliter on e-liquid and more than $10 per pod or disposable device.

A bill passed this week in New Jersey will require vape shops and most tobacco retailers to keep nicotine gum or other nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) products in stock and available for sale. The bill exempts cigar shops from the requirement.If the bill becomes law it will require “any entity that sells, offers for sale, or distributes for commercial purpose any tobacco product to maintain a stock of, and offer for retail sale, at least one type of nicotine replacement therapy drug, device, or combination product that has been approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration for cessation of tobacco use.”

The Bill proposes to exempt electronic cigarettes transported through Hong Kong via sea-air and land-air intermodal under a new part of the Import and Export Ordinance. Currently, the smoking regulations already provide exemptions for alternative smoking products that are transit articles or air transhipment cargo. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government stated that it will establish a new regulatory system that will be managed, supervised and enforced by the Hong Kong Customs to strengthen the supervision of intermodal transportation of e-cigarettes, thereby reducing the risk of alternative smoking products entering the local market during intermodal transportation in Hong Kong . The bill will be introduced to the Legislative Council for consideration on March 29.
