Manufacturers of synthetic nicotine products have — for now — a short window for applying for Food and Drug Administration approval of a premarket tobacco product application.In middle of March, President Joe Biden signed into law U.S. House Resolution 2471, a $1.5 trillion federal funding bill that contained language placing the use of synthetic nicotine under the FDA’s authority. That aspect of the law goes into effect April 14.

The excitement of last week’s news that Malaysia intends to legalize nicotine vaping has been dampened by details of the finance ministry’s plan. The government is proposing a tax rate so high it would have significant unintended consequences.

One of the best parts of vapes is the ability to choose your own nicotine strength. And that includes zero nicotine as an option too! Plenty of vapers begin vaping with the goal of weaning off nicotine until they reach zero; using vapes to quit smoking and to break the addiction to nicotine. Yet, some continue vaping without nicotine even after weaning off cigarettes. Then others use both nicotine and non-nicotine juice. Finally, there are vapers that have never used nicotine at all and instead use CBD vape pens.

A European Commission public consultation on the legislative framework for tobacco products is underway and will accept responses until May 16. The consultation—the second part of a process that began in 2022—launched in late February. While the consultation seeks comments on all tobacco products, it is clearly aimed at introducing harsher regulation for e-cigarettes and other low-risk nicotine products. Comments solicited will be used to shape changes to the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) and possibly the Tobacco Advertising Directive. The consultation itself was deliberately written to elicit anti-vaping responses, according to sources quoted in a Vejpkollen story. But it is the only tool European vapers and other nicotine product users have available to prevent the adoption of prohibitionist vaping laws.

TPD, namely Tobacco Products Directive or European Tobacco Products Directive (EUTPD), is a directive of the European Union which puts limits on the sale and transaction of tobacco and nicotine related products in the EU, formulated by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and updated to the version that we are subjecting to in the May 2017.The TPD aims to standardize the tobacco/vape market and protect consumers' right. As an overview, the policies for the Tobacco Products Directive(TPD) are: the regulation of tobacco/vape products on the EU market (e.g. packaging, labelling, and ingredients), advertising restrictions for tobacco/vape products, the creation of smoke-free environments, tax measures and activities against illegal trade.
