A European Commission public consultation on the legislative framework for tobacco products is underway and will accept responses until May 16. The consultation—the second part of a process that began in 2022—launched in late February. While the consultation seeks comments on all tobacco products, it is clearly aimed at introducing harsher regulation for e-cigarettes and other low-risk nicotine products. Comments solicited will be used to shape changes to the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) and possibly the Tobacco Advertising Directive. The consultation itself was deliberately written to elicit anti-vaping responses, according to sources quoted in a Vejpkollen story. But it is the only tool European vapers and other nicotine product users have available to prevent the adoption of prohibitionist vaping laws.

New Zealand has unveiled new messures to help restrict vaping amongst young people.The measures range from limits on sales near schools to a ban on some disposable units, as it extends aggressive anti-smoking campaigns. Although New Zealand has one of the lowest rates of adult smoking among the 38 nations in the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD),it has banned future generations from smoking in a push to be”smoke-free” by 2025. In 2022,the New Zealand government banned selling tobacco to anyone born on or after January 1,2009.

Philip Morris International (PMI) announced that its new corporate headquarters will be located in the heart of Stamford, Connecticut, and will open in summer 2022. The Philippines Senate today passed a bill that would legalize and regulate vaping and heated tobacco products, and eliminate the Philippines FDA’s authority over the products. The Vaporized Nicotine Products Regulation Act (SB 2239) was approved by a vote of 19-2, with two senators abstaining.The Philippines House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a similar bill in May. The two bills will now go to a conference committee where they will be reconciled, and both houses will vote on the final version. Then the unified bill will go to President Rodrigo Duterte to sign into law or veto (if he takes no action, the bill automatically becomes law after 30 days).
