  • Korean Trade Group Sues Government for Vaping Misinformation

    A South Korean vaping industry organization is suing two government agencies for spreading misinformation about nicotine vaping that it says caused financial distress for many of its members. The group wants the government to correct the record. The Korea Electronic Cigarette Association (KECA), which represents about 4,000 vape product retailers, alleges that the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) and Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) damaged the reputation of small vape businesses and caused them great financial harm.

As an overview, the policies for the Tobacco Products Directive(TPD) are: the regulation of tobacco/vape products on the EU market (e.g. packaging, labelling, and ingredients), advertising restrictions for tobacco/vape products, the creation of smoke-free environments, tax measures and activities against illegal trade.

    A European Commission public consultation on the legislative framework for tobacco products is underway and will accept responses until May 16. The consultation—the second part of a process that began in 2022—launched in late February. While the consultation seeks comments on all tobacco products, it is clearly aimed at introducing harsher regulation for e-cigarettes and other low-risk nicotine products. Comments solicited will be used to shape changes to the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) and possibly the Tobacco Advertising Directive. The consultation itself was deliberately written to elicit anti-vaping responses, according to sources quoted in a Vejpkollen story. But it is the only tool European vapers and other nicotine product users have available to prevent the adoption of prohibitionist vaping laws.

  • Lithuania’s Flavor Prohibition Takes Effect July 1st

    The Lithuanian Seimas (parliament) has finalized a law prohibiting the sale of vaping products in non-tobacco flavors. The flavor prohibition applies to all products, including those not containing nicotine. The legislation—which amends the country’s existing Law on Control of Tobacco, Tobacco Products and Related Products—passed by a 92-9 vote (with nine members abstaining), according to LRT. The ban will take effect July 1.

    Belgium has become the EU first country to ban the sale of disposable vapes in an effort to stop young people from becoming addicted to nicotine and to protect the environment. The sale of disposable electronic cigarettes is banned in Belgium on health and environmental grounds from 1 January. A ban on outdoor smoking in Milan came into force on the same day, as EU countries discuss tighter controls on tobacco. Announcing the ban last year, Belgium’s health minister, Frank Vandenbroucke, described electronic cigarettes as an “extremely harmful” product that damages society and the environment. “Disposable e-cigarettes is a new product simply designed to attract new consumers,” he told the Associated Press. “E-cigarettes often contain nicotine. Nicotine makes you addicted to nicotine. Nicotine is bad for your health.”
