Italy is adjusting its e-liquid tax for the fourth time in four years, and this time the changes will favor vaping consumers. The new rates will take effect April 1, following final passage by the Senate in late February. The country has reduced the taxes on e-liquids to levels set in 2021 by repealing the scheduled increase that took effect in January 2022. The tax rate on e-liquids containing nicotine will decrease from €0.175 (U.S. equivalent: $0.19) per milliliter to €0.13, and the zero-nicotine e-liquid tax will fall from €0.13/mL to €0.08.

The decline came alongside an increase in the percentage of U.S. adults who vape. Preliminary full-year 2022 results from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) showed just 11.2 percent of adults smoked every day or some days. More than half as many surveyed adults, 5.8 percent, used vaping products every day or some days. In the fourth quarter of 2022, adult vaping prevalence reached 6.6 percent—the highest number since the NHIS added vaping to its survey in 2019. The results are estimates, and could be revised later. The NHIS is conducted annually by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), a unit of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The Columbus, Ohio City Council voted Monday to prohibit sales of flavored vaping products and tobacco, making it one of just a few major cities between the east and west coasts to do so. The flavor ban passed unanimously (7-0), despite strong opposition from vaping businesses and other local retailers.The ordinance will take effect Jan. 1, 2024, assuming Mayor Andrew Ginther approves it. He has already indicated strong support for the law.
