A committee of the Israeli Knesset (parliament) will decide soon whether to approve the huge tax on vaping products imposed last November by the government’s finance ministry. The levy is the highest vape tax in the world. The tax is apparently already in effect, but it must be approved retroactively by the Knesset finance committee, according to Israeli researcher Zvi Herzig. The committee can also modify the order, which could mean reducing the extreme tax rate of nearly $7 (US) per milliliter on e-liquid and more than $10 per pod or disposable device.

Last Friday, Hawaiian state legislators passed a “tax parity” law that applies the same tax rate to vaping products as combustible cigarettes. If signed into law by Governor Josh Green, vaping products would be subject to a 70 percent wholesale tax—one of the highest rates in the country. The bill also bans sales to consumers by out-of-state retailers, which essentially bans online sales by sellers outside Hawaii.

On March 25th, 2022, the Northwest Territories announced that it’s ban on the sale of flavoured vaping products will take effect. This ban was intended to better protect the public and youth from vaping as “a significant health hazard… causing acute lung injury”, despite overwhelming evidence that these events were linked to illegal THC products purchased from the illicit market, not legal nicotine vape products.

A new law will ensure that vaping companies making electronic cigarettes using synthetic nicotine, in fruit flavors that appeal to teenagers, can be regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. When the law took effect Thursday, it closed a loophole that allowed the products to avoid oversight. Now, they must follow the same federal sales restrictions and age requirements as tobacco products, the Associated Press reported. The new law "allows FDA to protect the public health from the harms of tobacco products, regardless of the source of nicotine," the FDA said in a statement Wednesday. These vaping companies must register with the FDA and submit their products for review within 30 days, the AP reported. The change doesn't ban these products outright, but brings them under regulatory oversight.

Puff Bar vape, a popular disposable electronic cigarette that uses flavored synthetic nicotine, may face scrutiny now that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has the authority to regulate synthetic, or lab-created, nicotine products. On March 11, a new federal spending bill was signed into law giving the FDA regulatory power over synthetic nicotine, also called tobacco-free nicotine. Previously, the FDA only had the power to regulate products containing tobacco-based nicotine. Many e-cigarette makers, including Puff Bar, used this loophole to continue selling their nicotine-based products without gaining direct approval from the FDA.
