Following a brief public consultation, the Dutch government has announced it will carry out its plan to prohibit vaping flavors other than tobacco, although the final deadline has been postponed for the second time. The new rules specify a very limited list of allowed ingredients. The rule will allow flavored products to be manufactured until July 1, 2023, and sold until Oct. 1, 2023. The ban includes both nicotine-containing and zero-nicotine e-liquids, and applies to bottled vape juice and pre-filled pods and disposables. The new rules also prevent manufacturers from using words or images on packages that refer to anything but tobacco, according to Dutch public broadcaster NOS.

Brazil’s justice ministry last week ordered 32 retailers in the country to cease selling vaping products or face stiff daily fines. The companies were given 48 hours to comply.

Powerful interests within the government of Thailand are urging that the country reject the efforts of one cabinet minister to legalize and regulate nicotine vaping products, and instead reconfirm the country’s ban on sales and import of e-cigarettes. The National Tobacco Products Control Committee said it would advise the cabinet to uphold the ban in a meeting last week, according to The Nation Thailand. The committee’s position is supported by Public Health Ministry permanent secretary Kiattiphum Wongrajit. However, the full cabinet (or Council of Ministers), which controls the Thai government’s executive branch, will make the final decision.

The government says it is unlikely to follow Australia's vaping crackdown - at least this term. The Australian federal government has announced tough new measures in an effort to stop young people vaping. Health Minister Mark Butler said the bright colours, range of flavours, and accessibility had turned a generation of young people into nicotine addicts. "Vaping was sold to governments and to communities all around the world as a therapeutic product to help long term smokers quit. It was not sold as a recreational product, and in particular, not one for our kids. But that is what it's become: the biggest loophole, I think, in Australian healthcare history," Butler told the National Press Club. The Australian government will restrict flavours and colours, bring in "pharmaceutical-style" packaging, reduce the nicotine content, and halve the importation of non-prescription vapes.
