    A South Korean vaping industry organization is suing two government agencies for spreading misinformation about nicotine vaping that it says caused financial distress for many of its members. The group wants the government to correct the record.     The Macau Legislative Assembly today approved the first draft of a bill that will, if passed, ban sales of all vaping products in the wealthy Chinese semi-autonomous region. The proposed law would prohibit manufacture, distribution, sale, import, export, and transport in and out of Macau. The Macau Executive Council announced in January that it planned to propose a sales ban this year. On May 27, the government presented its draft bill, which includes proposed fines of 4,000 Macanese pataca (MOP) (about $500 U.S.) for individual offenders, and fines from 20,000-200,000 MOP ($2,500-25,000) for businesses.

    Last Friday, Hawaiian state legislators passed a “tax parity” law that applies the same tax rate to vaping products as combustible cigarettes. If signed into law by Governor Josh Green, vaping products would be subject to a 70 percent wholesale tax—one of the highest rates in the country. The bill also bans sales to consumers by out-of-state retailers, which essentially bans online sales by sellers outside Hawaii.

  • Panama Bans Sales and Import of E-cigarettes

    On June 30, almost a year after Panama’s National Assembly passed legislation banning vape product sales, Panamanian President Laurentino Cortizo gave his assent to the bill. The new law prohibits sales and importation of all vaping and heated tobacco products, with or without nicotine. The law does not criminalize use, but bans vaping in any place where smoking is not allowed. The new law also prohibits internet purchases, and gives customs officials authority to inspect, detain and seize shipments. Resellers are allowed to import banned products meant for export to third countries, according to La Prensa.
