Hong Kong residents who vape or use heated tobacco products (HTPs) will face a grim reality since this May. That’s when a ban on sales and importation of vapes takes effect, and the vape market will instantly shift from legal to illegal.Hong Kong retailers report that sales of vape products have surged in recent weeks, as desperate vapers try to stockpile products. But 90 percent of recently polled HTP users say they will return to smoking cigarettes after the ban takes effect.

Puff Bar vape, a popular disposable electronic cigarette that uses flavored synthetic nicotine, may face scrutiny now that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has the authority to regulate synthetic, or lab-created, nicotine products. On March 11, a new federal spending bill was signed into law giving the FDA regulatory power over synthetic nicotine, also called tobacco-free nicotine. Previously, the FDA only had the power to regulate products containing tobacco-based nicotine. Many e-cigarette makers, including Puff Bar, used this loophole to continue selling their nicotine-based products without gaining direct approval from the FDA.

A committee of the Israeli Knesset (parliament) will decide soon whether to approve the huge tax on vaping products imposed last November by the government’s finance ministry. The levy is the highest vape tax in the world. The tax is apparently already in effect, but it must be approved retroactively by the Knesset finance committee, according to Israeli researcher Zvi Herzig. The committee can also modify the order, which could mean reducing the extreme tax rate of nearly $7 (US) per milliliter on e-liquid and more than $10 per pod or disposable device.

A bill passed this week in New Jersey will require vape shops and most tobacco retailers to keep nicotine gum or other nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) products in stock and available for sale. The bill exempts cigar shops from the requirement. If the bill becomes law it will require “any entity that sells, offers for sale, or distributes for commercial purpose any tobacco product to maintain a stock of, and offer for retail sale, at least one type of nicotine replacement therapy drug, device, or combination product that has been approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration for cessation of tobacco use.”

If smoking or snus use has been excessive, even strong nicotine pouches should not cause any particular symptoms. Non-smokers or non-snus users should use milder nicotine pouches.Sometimes nicotine may be consumed excessively, which can cause side effects such as nausea and increased heart rate.

The Netherlands will postpone its flavor ban for six months, according to the Dutch vape trade association Esigbond. The decision to delay implementation of the law, which had been scheduled to take effect July 1, was made by the Dutch cabinet (Council of Ministers). The flavor ban, approved last May by the cabinet, will only allow sales of tobacco-flavored vaping products. To enforce the restrictions, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) created a list of approved flavorings, which Esigbond says was based on the list produced by Health Canada for its planned flavor ban. Esigbond says the list included two flavorings—isophorone and pyridine—known to be carcinogenic.
