Currently, the legal age for purchasing E-Cigarettes is set at 18 – this is also the legal age for buying cigarettes. In September 2020 the agency began reviewing Premarket Tobacco Applications (PMTAs), and has signalled it will not authorize flavored products without extraordinary evidence. Whether the agency will be successful creating an unwritten standard that eliminates legal flavored products (except tobacco and menthol) may be determined by federal courts. Most vape bans in the U.S. happen at the state and local levels.And while a few California cities—notably San Francisco—have banned sales of all vaping products, most American vape restrictions involve flavors and online sales. There are only a few of each, despite the large number of vaping bans that have been proposed in state legislatures in recent years—proof that grassroots opposition can stop bad legislation.

A committee of the Israeli Knesset (parliament) will decide soon whether to approve the huge tax on vaping products imposed last November by the government’s finance ministry. The levy is the highest vape tax in the world. The tax is apparently already in effect, but it must be approved retroactively by the Knesset finance committee, according to Israeli researcher Zvi Herzig. The committee can also modify the order, which could mean reducing the extreme tax rate of nearly $7 (US) per milliliter on e-liquid and more than $10 per pod or disposable device.

Powerful interests within the government of Thailand are urging that the country reject the efforts of one cabinet minister to legalize and regulate nicotine vaping products, and instead reconfirm the country’s ban on sales and import of e-cigarettes. Thailand’s vape ban has been in place since 2014, and has occasionally resulted in sensationally overzealous enforcement. The National Tobacco Products Control Committee said it would advise the cabinet to uphold the ban in a meeting last week, according to The Nation Thailand. The committee’s position is supported by Public Health Ministry permanent secretary Kiattiphum Wongrajit. However, the full cabinet (or Council of Ministers), which controls the Thai government’s executive branch, will make the final decision.
