A South Korean vaping industry organization is suing two government agencies for spreading misinformation about nicotine vaping that it says caused financial distress for many of its members. The group wants the government to correct the record. The Korea Electronic Cigarette Association (KECA), which represents about 4,000 vape product retailers, alleges that the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) and Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) damaged the reputation of small vape businesses and caused them great financial harm.

Currently, the legal age for purchasing E-Cigarettes is set at 18 – this is also the legal age for buying cigarettes. Issues arise however when retailers do not challenge the age of those they sell to, or parents and friends buying E-Cigarettes for those younger than them. Early last year the Independent British Vape Trade Association (IBVA) launched an Age of Sale Guidance for vape shops and retailers, due to concerns. Raising the legal age to 21 could be beneficial for trying to limit vaping products falling into the hands of young adults. There could also be benefits to vaping brands/retailers and parents appropriately educating underage children about the harms of smoking cigarettes and by extension, vaping.

Vaping is unsafe and potentially dangerous. While the long-term health effects are unclear, we do know that vaping in the short-term has been associated with nausea, vomiting, mouth and airway irritation, chest pain and heart palpitations. Taiwan’s national legislature (Legislative Yuan) banned e-cigarettes yesterday, passing the third reading of a series of amendments to the Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act. The new laws were first proposed last year by the country’s cabinet (Executive Yuan).Vaping products, classified as “tobacco-like products,” will be strictly prohibited, including sale, manufacture, promotion, import, and even personal use. The amendments will take effect a month after their publication by the government.
