Mexico will ban sales of all vaping and heated tobacco products, by decree of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The president signed the order in a ceremony held during a press conference Tuesday. The presidential decree was announced to coincide with World No Tobacco Day, the annual World Health Organization (WHO) celebration of tobacco control efforts. A WHO representative was on hand to give the Mexican president an award in “recognition of his leadership and unwavering support to strengthen tobacco control measures in Mexico.”

The Columbus, Ohio City Council voted Monday to prohibit sales of flavored vaping products and tobacco, making it one of just a few major cities between the east and west coasts to do so. The flavor ban passed unanimously (7-0), despite strong opposition from vaping businesses and other local retailers.The ordinance will take effect Jan. 1, 2024, assuming Mayor Andrew Ginther approves it. He has already indicated strong support for the law.

The government of Thailand has rejected the efforts of one cabinet minister to legalize and regulate nicotine vaping products, and will instead reconfirm the country’s ban on sales and import of e-cigarettes. Thailand’s vape ban has been in place since 2014, and has resulted in notoriously overzealous enforcement.

The smoking rate in 2022 among adult Americans dropped to its lowest rate since health officials began measuring it, according to survey results released yesterday. The decline came alongside an increase in the percentage of U.S. adults who vape. Preliminary full-year 2022 results from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) showed just 11.2 percent of adults smoked every day or some days. More than half as many surveyed adults, 5.8 percent, used vaping products every day or some days. In the fourth quarter of 2022, adult vaping prevalence reached 6.6 percent—the highest number since the NHIS added vaping to its survey in 2019. The results are estimates, and could be revised later. The NHIS is conducted annually by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), a unit of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
