  • FDA Authorizes Two Logic Vapes and Tobacco-flavored Refills

    The FDA has authorized marketing of two vaping devices and tobacco-flavored refills made by Logic Technology Development LLC, the vape product arm of Japan Tobacco International (JTI). These are the only vaping products authorized by the agency since Vuse Solo became the first in October 2021—more than five months ago. The FDA gave nods to the Logic Power and Logic Pro, and tobacco-flavored refills for both. Premarket Tobacco Applications (PMTAs) for both devices’ menthol refills remain under FDA review, as have nearly all menthol applications submitted to the agency. Logic submitted PMTAs for the Power and Pro devices and refills in 2019. They were among the earliest submissions—more than a year before the Sept. 9, 2020 PMTA submission deadline.

    A European Commission public consultation on the legislative framework for tobacco products is underway and will accept responses until May 16. The consultation—the second part of a process that began in 2022—launched in late February. While the consultation seeks comments on all tobacco products, it is clearly aimed at introducing harsher regulation for e-cigarettes and other low-risk nicotine products. Comments solicited will be used to shape changes to the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) and possibly the Tobacco Advertising Directive. The consultation itself was deliberately written to elicit anti-vaping responses, according to sources quoted in a Vejpkollen story. But it is the only tool European vapers and other nicotine product users have available to prevent the adoption of prohibitionist vaping laws.

The Australian federal government has announced tough new measures in an effort to stop young people vaping. "Vaping was sold to governments and to communities all around the world as a therapeutic product to help long term smokers quit. It was not sold as a recreational product, and in particular, not one for our kids. But that is what it's become: the biggest loophole, I think, in Australian healthcare history," Butler told the National Press Club. The Australian government will restrict flavours and colours, bring in "pharmaceutical-style" packaging, reduce the nicotine content, and halve the importation of non-prescription vapes.

    Powerful interests within the government of Thailand are urging that the country reject the efforts of one cabinet minister to legalize and regulate nicotine vaping products, and instead reconfirm the country’s ban on sales and import of e-cigarettes. Thailand’s vape ban has been in place since 2014, and has occasionally resulted in sensationally overzealous enforcement. The National Tobacco Products Control Committee said it would advise the cabinet to uphold the ban in a meeting last week, according to The Nation Thailand. The committee’s position is supported by Public Health Ministry permanent secretary Kiattiphum Wongrajit. However, the full cabinet (or Council of Ministers), which controls the Thai government’s executive branch, will make the final decision.
